Hay Fever and Acupuncture

A study published in the journal Pediatrics (November, 2004; 114(5): 1242-1247) looked at the efficacy of acupuncture for the treatment of allergic rhinitis (hay fever). Seventy-two subjects suffering from hay fever were randomly divided into two groups. The control group received “sham” acupuncture (superficial needling of non-acupuncture points). The other group received acupuncture treatments for eight weeks. The group receiving the acupuncture improved significantly more than the control group according to visual analog scale scores. The acupuncture group also had more days without symptoms than did the control group. Another study appearing in The American Journal of Chinese Medicine(2002;30(1):1-11) found that both acupuncture and sham acupuncture helped to relieve hay fever symptoms
